2023 Gwinnett Daily Post Super Six Cross Country
DACULA, Ga.- The boys and girls varsity cross country team prepares for their first meet on Saturday, Aug. 19 for the NEGA XC Championships at Athens Christian. The meet is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m for girls and 9 a.m. for boys.
The girls team finished third overall at the GHSA 3A Region 8 Championships and sixteen at state last season. Layla Melton came in as the overall regional champion in 2022 and finished tenth at state. Her personal best was a 19:58 5k time. Melton was named 2023 Gwinnett Daily Post Super Six after her performance last season.
On the boy's side, Anderson Mathias, Joshua Graves, and Everett Griffin will be the ones to look out for on the course. At region, Mathias and Griffin finished fifteenth and sixteenth, respectively. The boys were two points shy of qualifying for state last year with five athletes earning a personal record.
Mike Taylor became head coach of the program in 2019 and has led the Lions to new heights ever since.
"Hebron cross country is seeing a resurgence this season in middle school and high school. I am looking forward to great seasons from all our teams. Our varsity girls and boys have a great opportunity to make it to state this season and both are doing very well!" commented Taylor.
