VILLA RICA, Ga.- The Hebron Christian Academy football team defeated 5A school Villa Rica 13-6 on Friday night. The Lions were down 6-0 heading into halftime and came back to win the game with two touchdowns in the second half.
In the first quarter, both teams were scoreless with great drives by both teams. The Wildcats got on the board first with a touchdown by VR's quarterback Jzay Bell.
The Lions came back with a handoff touchdown to Devon Caldwell in the third quarter to tie the game up at six. This marks Caldwell's fifth touchdown of the season as he had 27 rushes for 212 yards on Friday. The sophomore is averaging 9.8 yards per carry.
Heading into the fourth quarter, the game was tied 6-6. The Lions found momentum when Justin Hornick scored off a handoff from Thomas Stallworth with 3:51 left in regulation. This gave the Lions their first lead of the game.
It was the Wildcat's turn to score with 3:51 left in the game. In their last drive, Hebron defensive back, Gerritt Kemp intercepted the ball to seal the victory for the Lions. HCA improves to 2-0 on the season while VR falls to 0-1.
The HCA defense held Villa Rica to 152 yards of offense and only six points. The Lions offense recorded 300 total yards of offense.
"There was a lot of adversity for us tonight, but I'm really proud of how our guys responded. It wasn't the prettiest game in the world, but to win the way that we did and fight all the way through, it was a special win," said head coach Jonathan Gess.
