DACULA, Ga.- The No. 1 in Class AAA Hebron girls basketball team defeated No. 1 in Class A St. Francis 66-57 on Wednesday afternoon to mark head coach Jan Azar's 700th career win as head coach.
JaKerra Butler and Danielle Ocho accounted for a large majority of Hebron's points in the paint with Butler recording 23 points and 11 rebounds. Ocho had 18 points, eight rebounds, and four assists. Mia James put up 10 points and three assists in Wednesday's contest.
Azar is the winningest coach in high school girls basketball in Georgia as her record as head coach is 700-124. The Lions improve to 12-2 on the season with their only losses to No. 1 Long Island Lutheran and No. 2 Montverde in the Nike Tournament of Champions. HCA finished seventh in the tournament as the team had a 2-2 in the tournament.
The Lions moved up to No. 11 in the latest MaxPreps rankings, No. 12 in the ESPN poll, and No. 10 in the ASGR basketball national Top 50. St. Francis is ranked No. 47 in the ASGR roll and finished 15th out of 16 teams at the Nike TOC in Phoenix, Ariz.
While at Hebron, Azar has won two state championship (2021,2023), one state runner-up finish, and a Final Four appearance. Prior to Hebron, Azar won 13 state championships with nine state titles coming in an 11-season span at Wesleyan. She was inducted into the Gwinnett County Sports Hall of Fame in 2012.
