Description of Services

For elementary students, a combination of small group and co-taught services are provided for reading, math, and/or writing. Our learning specialists work with students to equip them with the important skills necessary for demonstrating grade level competency in the classroom setting.

Reading: With reading instruction, we focus on improving phonetics, reading fluency, and reading comprehension. The Orton-Gillingham approach is utilized to remediate phonics skills. This can be provided in pull-out segments or by pushing into the classroom during phonics instruction time. Reading with students one-on-one or in a small group, both inside and outside the classroom, is also utilized to help them improve their reading fluency.

Math: For math instruction, we use the co-taught model within the classroom to be of support to students who may need some extra help. Per their accommodation plan requirements, students may also be offered a quiet space for additional pull-out instruction and/or extended time to complete their math tests. Reading aloud of math word problems is provided as well. With the use of manipulatives and a variety of strategies, we utilize hands-on opportunities to provide students with the tools they need to problem solve in a way that makes the most sense to them.

Written Expression: For writing instruction, we use the co-taught model within the classroom to be of support to students who may need some extra help. Per their accommodation plan requirements, students may also be offered a quiet space for additional pull-out instruction and/or extended time to complete their writing requirements. With the use of graphic organizers, assistive technology, and a variety of strategies, we utilize opportunities to provide students with the tools they need to produce in a way that makes the most sense to them.

Handwriting: Formal handwriting assessments are provided based upon the results of handwriting samples. Students who would benefit from handwriting intervention to improve the legibility of their handwriting are selected to participate in small group pull-out sessions for additional instruction. The Handwriting Without Tears program is utilized during these small groups as a hands-on, engaging approach to improving the sequence, size, and orientation of letters and numbers as well as spacing and line proximity.

Description of Services

Enrichment Center: Our Enrichment Center is designed for the continued provision of a student’s accommodations. The Enrichment Center is staffed throughout the day. Students may come during any class period to work on tests and quizzes as well as on projects that require assistive technology. The Enrichment team is there to provide read aloud support, extended time, clarification of directions, and encouragement. Teachers work with the Enrichment team to notify them of upcoming assessments and student usage.
 
Connections Class: Our connections class is available for middle school students with learning plans and is designed to provide them individualized attention and support on class assignments and learning needs. Students are taught helpful study and organizational skills to support executive functioning needs.  
 
Co-Taught Model: Two certified teachers working in the classroom with your child; the content teacher and a special education teacher. With this model, students can spend more time with the teachers and receive more individual attention. Students then have the opportunity to learn from teachers who may have different teaching styles, ideas, perspective, and experience to support learning and thinking differences within the classroom. It also places a case manager IN the classroom with your student to assist with the provision of accommodations for things like accurate and timely study guides, graphic organizers and instructional strategies.
